i know all these companies choke over how to word these awful policies, but โsexually gratifyingโ feels particularly heinous. just blatantly shifting the blame onto someone who has absolutely no say in how โgratifiedโ their audience is.

About a year ago, my parents made the switch to Linux on their home machines because they really hated Win 10... Today I got a call from my mother to help her out with something, but I did not expect that "something" will be figuring out a sed pattern for a shell script she wrote to bulk rename files.
When I asked her why she didn't use some GUI program she said "I was an accountant in the DOS era, this makes more sense to me than a ribbon menu in Excel".
vidir from moreutils is very useful for stuff like this. allows you to open files/directory paths as if they're a text file in your editor then rename them there.

Welp, FreeTube, Invidious, and Piped are down again; and probably others as well; so I hope that it gets fixed, but it's likely it may take a bit from what I can understand anyway.
I prefer content variety, PeerTube is kinda meh, and Odysee? Well let's just say: "Absolutely proprietary!" because it's using some OSS, and it's not entirely OSS. Are you familiar with @nlnet ? Their core business is to support organisations and people who contribute to an open internet, by funding projects and making available a slew of services. I have collaborated with them in a couple of projects, which has been an excellent experience.
yes to all you said + Please not only fund but also use the result and make that success visible to the public. Make them/us aware. Otherwise the money is wasted. Fund a tool or project and use it. Make the people that they want to benefit from the possibilities.
Examples (maybe they are bad but the idea should become clear.) Fund Matrix and Element and use it for communication with a doctor, announcement of traffic jam or emergency notifications bla bla. Create good use cases.
I work for a Europe-based company that provides support and development for OSS. The marketing people say the news coming out of the US has been great for the company. So it is happening, just perhaps not as much or as fast as we'd like.

I think there's probably a case for some software not being open source. It does let your adversaries have a look at code running on all your important stuff. The more is automated and such in your infrastructure the more impact a zero-day could have.
Your government should own the code though, or be able to look at and audit it. That's a must. It's nuts to buy something from some company that might have a shutoff in it.
Wait until they learn where Windows, MacOS, iOS or Android are made.... I really want to see them funding a new OS and completely ignore the linux world. Sounds like them ๐ฅฒ
What assurance do you have that those governments won't pick really inefficient, cumbersome-to-maintain, bogged-down-with-complexity OpenSource projects, which get mired in problems down the road - BUT have the virtue of having more bells and whistles (conveniences, simplifications) that the end users will like?
Do those governments have incentive to pick the mature, lean-and-mean #OpenSource choices, which have less bells and whistles, -OR- the bloated, cumbersome, Johhny-come-lately Open Source choices, *with more end-user convenience*, and are likely to run way over budget in the longer term? I predict they'll choose the second kind of choice, in a short-sighted, desperate attempt to bring the most convenience to the end users. And it'll bog down in a few years - being really hard to maintain and support; the project being a failure. They'll return back to closed source in a few years - *and thereby get all the end-user convenience they were wanting all along*, realizing they have to pay for it.
I think the problem for them has been the same as for everyone: there has not been a really strong motive to move away from the very mature and quite convenient US-based services.
It takes more than a license change, it also requires a different way of thinking about software. Far too much F/OSS copies monolithic ideas that come from proprietary software that is designed to keep people on a single companyโs products. LibreOffice/ OpenOffice have the excuse that they started as proprietary programs and were open sourced but they have the same sorts of problems: the codebase is enormous and baroque so the number of people who can fix bugs is small. To really benefit from F/OSS, you have to focus on building small systems that can compose, not on enormous monoliths. That way, each piece can be understood and supported by a single person and getting a second source is easy.
Unfortunately, that opens up new problems. There was some news article recently about third party companies (lacking in-depth nowledge about the software) claimed support contracts with goverment institutions and grabbed tax money, while the actual developers of open source software were largely left out.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the original Mozilla suite icons? How thematically similar they are, while also indicating what the apps are for? For example, almost nobody's heard of Sunbird, but I bet you can tell it's for calendars!
this is especially useful when comparing these to the Google suite of apps which attempt to be thematically similar but wind up being too similar visually. The use of color by Mozilla made all the difference IMHO

To those who believe quote posts are abusive, there is no data whatsoever that shows any correlation between quote posts and abuse.
And actually, platforms like #Misskey, #Akkoma, and #Friendica have had that feature for years, and hardly anyone using those platforms has ever complained.
In fact, I use quote posts every day. No oneโs complained to me about my use of quote posts.
Nevertheless, Mastodon is doing the right thingโand it takes serious courage to tell the Fedi Gatekeepers that this will happen. There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth. But itโs a change that needed to happen.

Most time I saw them used on Twitter (years ago), it was to start a pile-on without warning the victim in their "mentions" tab. I hope Mastodon will notify the quoted author.

@mjr I saw a study that said specifically there is no correlation. That study was made in 2022. Unfortunately, I canโt find that specific study so Iโm not going to cite it.
Whatever the case, though, itโs on people making a claim to prove their claims.
Regarding what you saw on Twitter, thatโs easily explainable: Twitterโs algorithm was incentivized to show you outrageous content. Itโs unlikely that quotes caused dogpiles โ it was more likely due to the feed algorithm.

I'm pretty sure Twitter quote posts were added way back when we still had chronological feeds and they were a problem pretty much as soon as people realised they didn't count as mentions.
@mjr No one is claiming that quote posts are safe. The claim is that thereโs no evidence that theyโre more unsafe than other social media features.
Tell me why hashtags are more safe than quote posts. Hashtags, just like quote posts, increase visibility of messages on social media. Yet no one is asking that hashtags be removed as a feature because theyโre abusive.

@tchambers Iโd wager that, properly conducted (which is incredibly difficult to do) there are, in fact, connections between QTs and abuse. I think also that some of the founding Mastodon intuitions about QTs vs. replies and fostering conversation with vs. conversation about are right, and Iโve found it refreshing and interesting to be somewhere where they donโt exist to explore the affordances. I was struck on Threads and Bluesky how annoying I now find many (non-abusive) uses of QT to be. That said, they have uses, and many people want them: crucially, they are now implemented on Threads, on Bluesky, and will be here, with safeguards built in. @UlrikeHahn @tchambers I emphatically disagree. However, Mastodon is now going in the direction it should beโwhich is to be an actual alternative to Twitter. Because the truth is, I donโt think the world can afford centralized social media anymore.
@UlrikeHahn @tchambers There's been a lot of study on this, and QTs just do not contribute significantly to harassment and abuse. But even if they did, the affordances here are different. Followers-only replies are a *much* larger concern than quote posts.

The reply is visible to the OP, and the crowd of other abusers that follow the first abuser, but no one else. Not even the mods on OP's server 3. The crowd of other abusers pile on, invisible 4. Everyone else gas lights OP about it, saying they've never seen this abuse and so it must be made up, and/or OP's fault.

@jenniferplusplus @UlrikeHahn @tchambers Iโve always known Mastodon has a reply guy problem. And I knew it was worse than on other platforms but I couldnโt put my finger on why. And I think you elucidated exactly the reason.
Honestly, there's so much more in this vein. This is just the worst one. There's so many affordances that invite immediate, careless replies. And so many that discourage reading or seeking context. Replies are worse here because the software supports reply guys, and hampers establishing norms against it.
@jenniferplusplus Yep, three years ago, I put in a feature request on Mastodon for comment controls. Itโs pretty common sense to have since, yeah, it would cut down on abuse drastically. Havenโt heard anything back from Mastodon, but I certainly got a lot of angry people who demand that this never be implemented.
At the very least, you should be able to opt out of receiving comments. Still not here, but at least Mastodon allows you to opt out of quote posts. Now if only they would allow this for comments.

Chrissy Teigen posted this adorable photo to Instagram and of course 2/3 of the comments are from absolute freaks sexualizing the hell out of it, because so much of the world (America especially) is so puritanical about "nudity" while any amount of violence is of course totally fine. ๐
Regardless of what you think about Chrissy Teigen, it's amazing that she's able to still post so many photos of herself looking happy, considering the insane amount of hatred she gets on all her posts. people are so pathetically desperate for attention, they'll hate on anything for any reason.
