I think there's probably a case for some software not being open source. It does let your adversaries have a look at code running on all your important stuff. The more is automated and such in your infrastructure the more impact a zero-day could have.
Your government should own the code though, or be able to look at and audit it. That's a must. It's nuts to buy something from some company that might have a shutoff in it.

What assurance do you have that those governments won't pick really inefficient, cumbersome-to-maintain, bogged-down-with-complexity OpenSource projects, which get mired in problems down the road - BUT have the virtue of having more bells and whistles (conveniences, simplifications) that the end users will like?
Do those governments have incentive to pick the mature, lean-and-mean #OpenSource choices, which have less bells and whistles, -OR- the bloated, cumbersome, Johhny-come-lately Open Source choices, *with more end-user convenience*, and are likely to run way over budget in the longer term? I predict they'll choose the second kind of choice, in a short-sighted, desperate attempt to bring the most convenience to the end users. And it'll bog down in a few years - being really hard to maintain and support; the project being a failure. They'll return back to closed source in a few years - *and thereby get all the end-user convenience they were wanting all along*, realizing they have to pay for it.
I think the problem for them has been the same as for everyone: there has not been a really strong motive to move away from the very mature and quite convenient US-based services.
It takes more than a license change, it also requires a different way of thinking about software. Far too much F/OSS copies monolithic ideas that come from proprietary software that is designed to keep people on a single companyโs products. LibreOffice/ OpenOffice have the excuse that they started as proprietary programs and were open sourced but they have the same sorts of problems: the codebase is enormous and baroque so the number of people who can fix bugs is small. To really benefit from F/OSS, you have to focus on building small systems that can compose, not on enormous monoliths. That way, each piece can be understood and supported by a single person and getting a second source is easy.
Unfortunately, that opens up new problems. There was some news article recently about third party companies (lacking in-depth nowledge about the software) claimed support contracts with goverment institutions and grabbed tax money, while the actual developers of open source software were largely left out.

And actually, platforms like #Misskey, #Akkoma, and #Friendica have had that feature for years, and hardly anyone using those platforms has ever complained.
In fact, I use quote posts every day. No oneโs complained to me about my use of quote posts.
Nevertheless, Mastodon is doing the right thingโand it takes serious courage to tell the Fedi Gatekeepers that this will happen. There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth. But itโs a change that needed to happen.

Regarding what you saw on Twitter, thatโs easily explainable: Twitterโs algorithm was incentivized to show you outrageous content. Itโs unlikely that quotes caused dogpiles โ it was more likely due to the feed algorithm.

I think also that some of the founding Mastodon intuitions about QTs vs. replies and fostering conversation with vs. conversation about are right, and Iโve found it refreshing and interesting to be somewhere where they donโt exist to explore the affordances. I was struck on Threads and Bluesky how annoying I now find many (non-abusive) uses of QT to be. That said, they have uses, and many people want them: crucially, they are now implemented on Threads, on Bluesky, and will be here, with safeguards built in. The reply is visible to the OP, and the crowd of other abusers that follow the first abuser, but no one else. Not even the mods on OP's server 3. The crowd of other abusers pile on, invisible 4. Honestly, there's so much more in this vein. This is just the worst one. There's so many affordances that invite immediate, careless replies. And so many that discourage reading or seeking context. Replies are worse here because the software supports reply guys, and hampers establishing norms against it.
@jenniferplusplus Yep, three years ago, I put in a feature request on Mastodon for comment controls. Itโs pretty common sense to have since, yeah, it would cut down on abuse drastically. Havenโt heard anything back from Mastodon, but I certainly got a lot of angry people who demand that this never be implemented.
At the very least, you should be able to opt out of receiving comments. Still not here, but at least Mastodon allows you to opt out of quote posts. Now if only they would allow this for comments.

Started the day with the trumpers' kid shoving my 6-year-old to the ground while they were waiting for the school bus... he says that Aeden was being mean to him first but this kid has a history of being rather physically violent so even if Aeden was being annoying, I don't think shoving him to the ground against the curb is the answer. I texted the trumper kid's parents, who I get along with as long as I don't ever ever mention politics, and asked if we could meet with the kids after school and try to work out some kind of conflict resolution, but privately it's not surprising to see the child of loud, unabashed Trump supporters turn out more violent even though he's only eight so far. ๐ก
