Part of my job is taking old research code and trying to turn it into something more production-ready. A lot of that job is optimizing, but also removing a whole bunch of accidental complexity. The original author often didn't know what the solution looked like when they started.

But since the new code had to exist alongside the original code, I had to copy and paste a lot. So ... a whole bunch of naming-things-is-hard instances popped out. FooWidget often became SimpleFooWidget, for lack any more prominent property to describe.

In hindsight, it was a terrible naming scheme. I guess I was only into the S, not the M. :blobcatgooglyshrug:

So, my uni women's rowing club decided to restrict membership to cis women only. In response, a new "open" division was created that anyone can compete in.

Lots of women left to join the open division instead, and now the women's club are complaining about losing their best rowers.

Be transphobic, lose support.

heat stroke victims may be confused or incapable of seeking or reaching help, so be prepared to render first aid and find help for them. Get them to shelter or shade, lie them down in a cool / low a place as possible (hot air rises) and help them hydrate. A cold bath or shower can help lower core temp quickly. Keep their skin wet and prioritize cooling their head, neck, armpits, and groin with water, ice, cold packs, damp towels, anything available.

Austria-Hungary had a complex internal structure. The head of state was Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary at the same time, or "Kaiser und König" in German. This was often abbreviated as "K. u. K." when talking about institutions that applied to both Austria and Hungary.

So, technically, it would not be wholly inaccurate to describe the Austro-Hungarian throne as "the K. u. K. chair"

Can we please all stop the "newcomers to Mastodon should visit this and that site, follow these rules" etc? Social networks evolve. Trying to control the behaviour of newcomers is condescending and counterproductive in my opinion. I don't want the Fediverse to become a walled garden. #UnpopularOpinion, maybe. So be it.

Internet helped me to figure out my gender identity in an environment that had strict gender expectations for me. It helped me to get free from cult-ish religion and become more open minded and shed biases that had been stuffed into mh adolesent brain against my will.

Internet can be a great asset an escape.

They should instead be banning LLM:s stealing everyone's data, and making people addicted to it on purpose. "AI" reliance is way worse than TikTok to growing brains.
