“male socialization” or “male privilege” it’s not like i cannot cast my mind back and find examples prior to transition that technically fit the simple description- as a trans woman
it’s that
- I’ve seen and heard the male socialization stories from actually cis men and there’s just no comparison. it’s a different thing. Cis men and pretransition transfems do not get treated or socialosed in the same ways.
- a cis man experiences those things as normal and expected. a trans fem experiences it as being forced into an uncomfortable role they do not wamt and did not ask for. the cumulative experience of that over thousands of instances year over year adds up to a whole different experience.
that is literally what being transgender is. And why it doesn’t make sense to say trans women have been “male socialized” no matter how legitimate a description you think that is to have in the world.
The imposing of that experience and expectation on transfems is an extension of transmisogyny- namely the tendency for us to not be believed about our own experiences.

I was always extremely uncomfortable with the way boys would say things about women and girls and never participate in it. and, in retrospect, I got a ton of shit for it. the boys I was forced to be around thought I was gay because I didn't want to be crass and chauvinist toward women.

thinking back to the classic male socialization events I did participate in, I invariably went off script by treating them exactly the same as any other event. Which meant a lot of the time they were unbearably boring.
Did* I have brain worms about gendered roles? Absolutely. Did I identify with masculinity and doing masculine things? Not really no.

I'm curious about the male socialisation stories. I wonder what I might have "missed out" on. I don't think I experienced a typical "male" upbringing.
Sure I was given boy's toys like cars and I played with them but I also played dolls with my sister. I did feel the social pressure to not like girly stuff so I knew to steer away from such things when I secretly liked them. I think this made me a very secretive person in general.
My father was distant and didn't encourage me to engage in any masculine activities. I was never pushed to do any sports or anything like that. When I got in to computers around age 13 I got sucked in and hid myself from the world in my bedroom whenever I wasn't forced to go out for school or whatever.
One experience that sticks in my mind is when I was in university, a friend practically dragged me in to a strip club and forced me in to getting a "private dance". The whole experience was really weird and uncomfortable and I felt really sorry for the young woman doing this "dance" for me. I felt completely disgusted with myself afterwards.

I like to think that those who use the term "male socialisation" often uses it in good faith and lack of any other term. I think a more descriptive term that applies to trans women is "forced male socialisation."
As that is what I hink most of us can relate to. That it was forced upon us, but failed in the same way trying to make a left-handed person write with the right hand.
Like @rachel mentions, it's more like a trauma to go through. So I don't think it's used by all to say we have been socialised as male, but more attempted to be, which adds to our trauma.

Also social media nowadays is a passive medium for consumption, that doesn't work with forums.

So, my uni women's rowing club decided to restrict membership to cis women only. In response, a new "open" division was created that anyone can compete in.
Lots of women left to join the open division instead, and now the women's club are complaining about losing their best rowers.

I have to say, I absolutely love the "conses of those quences." It's beautiful to see.
I am reminded that a college friend, male, rowed on the men's lightweight four and coxswained one of the women's boats.
Nobody complained.
It might make sense, at least in some sports, to have age, weight and/or height classes, rather than sex restricted teams. I am not sure it would work for all sports--but I'm not sure it wouldn't.
But it's worth a try. At the very least it would be interesting. It might even answer some questions about how sex matters in sport.
i’m a trans masters rower and the rowing community is generally very good with gender stuff!
over the winter there was a scare that trans women would be banned from rowing entirely, but us rowing essentially said that they will never check or respond to any reports that a rower is trans and should be disqualified. also pretty much all of the regattas have rejected that policy entirely. also my team and coaches said that they would openly defy the ban if it came to it.
also the coxswains (the people who steer the boat and give instructions and who dont contribute with their muscles but absolutely contribute to the boats speed) dont have to be the same gender as the rowers. so cis men have won medals in women’s events at the olympics ever since 2020, and cis women have won medals in men’s events.

my experience in the sports that I've done with any level of seriousness is
women would generally prefer to compete against everyone, and finish in the middle of the pack (or even lower)
than be at the "top" of women-only divisions
ALL athletes like to push themselves against the best competition, and care more about how other athletes see them than some result in the newspaper

Your very clever, you built a robot that makes tea. You want to share your brilliant new robot with everyone. Everyone likes tea right? So you make it a nice mobile base and give it some arms and set it off around your town.
At every house it stops and knocks on the door. If someone answers it asks "would you like a cup of tea?"
"No thank you" They say and slam the door.
Three hours later the bot comes back, it's been round all the houses and has started again.

Next week someone else makes a bot that makes coffee and we start this entire cycle again.

The great thing about the idea of a maximum working temperature is it acts as an automatic workers strike for climate change.
Like imagine everyone walking out of every office and workshop today. How long would oil companies bosses last with every other rich CEO unable to make money.
But also remember how greenhouse gas emissions dropped like a stone with the lockdowns?
While a max working temp law is great from just a protecting people point of view, it's secondary effects are massive and why I think there is a going to be a huge pushback from some of the most polluting companies. But I think it'll happen eventually.

I experienced this sort of "transition" from heat exhaustion to heat stroke some years ago. I fell asleep at a 110 °F heat and It was afternoon. I woke up at around 1 AM.
I wasn't sweating anymore, felt dizzy with a throbbing headache but I still had a cool skin. I feel like my legs would cramp anytime at that moment too. I was never hungry for water until that moment.

In the interests of fairness, we'll start with what the diagram got right. Sometimes there is endometrium inside a menstrual cup, because endometrial cells form a part of menstrual fluid. That's it, that's the post on what the image got right.

However, menstrual fluid does not typically look like strawberry milkshake and if it does, then you'll probably want to see a doctor about that. But that's the least of our worries. More importantly, menstrual cups absolutely do not go inside the body, particularly not somehow through some sort of small opening in what appears to be the bladder.

My dad had this conversation with me just before he left for work (night shift):

reminds me of the person on reddit who claimed that people change their minds when presented with new evidence, someone replied linking like three studies that show that people don't usually change their minds when presented with new evidence, and the original poster responded saying they didn't care and were going to keep believing that anyway

Can we please all stop the "newcomers to Mastodon should visit this and that site, follow these rules" etc? Social networks evolve. Trying to control the behaviour of newcomers is condescending and counterproductive in my opinion. I don't want the Fediverse to become a walled garden. #UnpopularOpinion, maybe. So be it.

Nudging people once in a friendly and respectful way to get a profile picture and put some words in their bio is fine, but do check the replies to see if someone else already did that before you add your "well, actually" ;).
Also, remember why people don’t. Some people just want to read. Their accounts are there because you need an account to be able to follow multiple people or hashtags in the fediverse. If they want to be passive observers that’s okay. They aren’t being nefarious by not posting personal information that will cause people to send them unsolicited messages, they’re just shy.
And when people block follow requests for these people, don’t be surprised if they go and tell all of their offline friends that there’s nothing worth reading here.

I fully agree with your points. Especially the second one.
The first point might cause confusion for some of the people you mentioned, as they might ask themselves: ‘Well, why are your suggestions acceptable, but mine aren’t?’
That’s the difference between addressing a newcomer and someone who knows how things work.

yeah, this. We are trying to foster a better social culture here,and because of how other networks operate,we have to be vocal about reminding newcomers that certain behavior is actually not OK and certain things are expected when someone takes responsibility for their own social media.
Things work differently here, people shouldn't have to guess or figure it out on their own when we've already learned the hard lessons and wrote th down.
I don't think it's an unpopular opinion. Instance rules should still be followed though but everyone should pretty much just enjoy their time here. Those people who tell others to follow this, that and other crap are just annoying. They remind me of my parents and they fucking suck.

part of the beauty of mastodon is an instance can make as many rules as it wants. But if people don't like them they can move instance.

Internet helped me to figure out my gender identity in an environment that had strict gender expectations for me. It helped me to get free from cult-ish religion and become more open minded and shed biases that had been stuffed into mh adolesent brain against my will.
Internet can be a great asset an escape.
They should instead be banning LLM:s stealing everyone's data, and making people addicted to it on purpose. "AI" reliance is way worse than TikTok to growing brains.
