given an abstract description of
“male socialization” or “male privilege” it’s not like i cannot cast my mind back and find examples prior to transition that technically fit the simple description- as a trans woman
it’s that
that is literally what being transgender is. And why it doesn’t make sense to say trans women have been “male socialized” no matter how legitimate a description you think that is to have in the world.
The imposing of that experience and expectation on transfems is an extension of transmisogyny- namely the tendency for us to not be believed about our own experiences.
Sensitive content
so a critical thing that no one seems to believe understand or think about is, while trans men apparently want to hold onto “female socialisation” to describe the deep friendships they developed amongst girls, and women and in the lesbian community;
for so many transfems growing up our experiences are being violently rejected by both the boys and the girls;
The boys for not going along with their bullshit, not being super athletic, whatever it is, pretransition/closeted transfems are not enthusiastically participating in locker room talk or big nights out at the strip club

I would assume boys saying crass things about women/girls when they think they're in the presence of other boys wouldn't strike you the same way it would a cis guy. I'd asume it'd disgust you, anger you, or possibly even frighten. Am I correct in my assumptions?
<<<
speaking purely for myself, in the extremely rare case i found myself amongst groups of guys, i would kind of play along because i got the sense if i didn’t they’d beat the shit out of me for being a fag

right like i am not gonna sit here on my bed coughing my brains out and type to you like I and all transfems are saints who never subscribed or parroted any toxic gender norm.
but to put things in context i have met more cis women who have said really misogynistic shit about women than I have met trans women in total

in reality I wanted to be like the girls they were being chauvinist toward, so whenever they said something in that vein, I identified with the girls being targeted rather than the boys doing the lewd talking.
but, yep, I was totally "male socialized" 🙄

If you "socialized" to find the way men treat women to be okay, why would you become the target? The "male socialization" argument seemed bunk on it's face to me beyond a few mannerisms.

thinking back to the classic male socialization events I did participate in, I invariably went off script by treating them exactly the same as any other event. Which meant a lot of the time they were unbearably boring.
Did* I have brain worms about gendered roles? Absolutely. Did I identify with masculinity and doing masculine things? Not really no.
* past tense just for consistency, I'm not claiming I've shed them all.

I'm curious about the male socialisation stories. I wonder what I might have "missed out" on. I don't think I experienced a typical "male" upbringing.
Sure I was given boy's toys like cars and I played with them but I also played dolls with my sister. I did feel the social pressure to not like girly stuff so I knew to steer away from such things when I secretly liked them. I think this made me a very secretive person in general.
My father was distant and didn't encourage me to engage in any masculine activities. I was never pushed to do any sports or anything like that. When I got in to computers around age 13 I got sucked in and hid myself from the world in my bedroom whenever I wasn't forced to go out for school or whatever.
One experience that sticks in my mind is when I was in university, a friend practically dragged me in to a strip club and forced me in to getting a "private dance". The whole experience was really weird and uncomfortable and I felt really sorry for the young woman doing this "dance" for me. I felt completely disgusted with myself afterwards.

I like to think that those who use the term "male socialisation" often uses it in good faith and lack of any other term. I think a more descriptive term that applies to trans women is "forced male socialisation."
As that is what I hink most of us can relate to. That it was forced upon us, but failed in the same way trying to make a left-handed person write with the right hand.
Like @rachel mentions, it's more like a trauma to go through. So I don't think it's used by all to say we have been socialised as male, but more attempted to be, which adds to our trauma.
If hosting gay porn makes the Fediverse unpalatable to capital & media, I feel that it should be mandatory for all instances to so host.
If an instance doesn’t have gay porn in their public feeds, I’m requesting that they get a better user base.
I’m picturing Rosie the Riveter, but her arm is super buff from drawing gender swapped yuri dojinshi of the hit television sitcom Frasier.
“We can do it!”
(This is the second or third post on this topic I've seen (I've also seen sufficient quantities of gay porn, thankfully, but there's a baseline presence of that) -- would you happen to be willing to explain/link briefly what's the source of the topic this is responding to?)
(No worries if not.)
EDIT: Answered! Thank you to all who answered.
On one hand I agree...
On the other, mine is a single user instance (for lack of others joining), and I don't feel comfortable posting my own teeny weeny, other's adult images, or the single drawn dick I have on my tablet.
... But... But I'm my only user!
(... I'll see what I can do. ;) )
@Shannon Prickett unless your instance is hosted on hetzner, I guess?
but please, everybody who is not hosted on hetzner, post *more* gay porn for the ones who are!
(with proper CWs, please, actually seeing said gay porn it's not exactly my thing 😁 )

The internet has become an extractive and fragile monoculture. But we can revitalize it using lessons learned by ecologists.Maria Farrell (NOEMA)
I feel like something that is rarely discussed here is that the number and kind of people online have changed a lot.
Nowaways it's roughly everyone, back then it was mostly enthusiasts of something.
Forums are great for a community that shares an interest and wants to discuss it.
But many people don't have a hobby that has a community.
Also social media nowadays is a passive medium for consumption, that doesn't work with forums.
1/2
I wonder if specialised communities will go back to something like forums though.
My impression is that these kinds of info are kept in wikis nowadays. Easier to search but no community.
2/2
But you can.
Sex. Sex sex sex.
What you do with walled gardens that want to censor - or any forum you find offensive - is go elsewhere. The door swings both ways - if you can't express yourself, you can go elsewhere. You don't have to participate in the censored billionaire-sponsored ad farms.
Back in the late 90's, I ran an ISP. You could put up web pages with anything you wanted. That's never changed. You can get free web hosting today, lots of places.
Don't mistake the meta and google and such for the real world.
@tbortels sadly "decentralized" is not always a solution, i was banned from multiple server because i said the truth about some project, like @Vivaldi who is an US tech making EU wasing as all their server are in US (Server in EU owned by US big tech is US server).
The issue is also the mentality of half the people of internet that want to delete anything they don't like
Radio went through the same arc in the 1920s. Wide open at first, then heavily regulated once it got big enough to matter. Every new medium seems to follow this same curve from freedom to control.
So, my uni women's rowing club decided to restrict membership to cis women only. In response, a new "open" division was created that anyone can compete in.
Lots of women left to join the open division instead, and now the women's club are complaining about losing their best rowers.
Be transphobic, lose support.

@ASprinkleofSage
I always just add one word to that: go woke or go broke.
(added: ...because, in actual fact, it does tend to work out that way: the majority are not again with all the bigoted shenans.)
I am reminded that a college friend, male, rowed on the men's lightweight four and coxswained one of the women's boats.
Nobody complained.
It might make sense, at least in some sports, to have age, weight and/or height classes, rather than sex restricted teams. I am not sure it would work for all sports--but I'm not sure it wouldn't.
But it's worth a try. At the very least it would be interesting. It might even answer some questions about how sex matters in sport.
i’m a trans masters rower and the rowing community is generally very good with gender stuff!
over the winter there was a scare that trans women would be banned from rowing entirely, but us rowing essentially said that they will never check or respond to any reports that a rower is trans and should be disqualified. also pretty much all of the regattas have rejected that policy entirely. also my team and coaches said that they would openly defy the ban if it came to it.
also the coxswains (the people who steer the boat and give instructions and who dont contribute with their muscles but absolutely contribute to the boats speed) dont have to be the same gender as the rowers. so cis men have won medals in women’s events at the olympics ever since 2020, and cis women have won medals in men’s events.
I love rowing. It's the only exercise machine I've considered buying because the old folks center where I work out doesn't have one, or room for one.
Were I in college, and rowing, I would have joined the walkout. Good for them.
Players are considering only competing in the ‘open’ category, which allows people of any sex or gender to playGuardian staff reporter (the Guardian)
Now the ones that remained are the Rowling club.
I'll see myself out.
my experience in the sports that I've done with any level of seriousness is
women would generally prefer to compete against everyone, and finish in the middle of the pack (or even lower)
than be at the "top" of women-only divisions
ALL athletes like to push themselves against the best competition, and care more about how other athletes see them than some result in the newspaper
I both love this as like a FU to TERFs in general. But also the phrase "conses of your quences" is gonna stick with me, thank you for that.
I wish the new rowing club much success and joy!

Your very clever, you built a robot that makes tea. You want to share your brilliant new robot with everyone. Everyone likes tea right? So you make it a nice mobile base and give it some arms and set it off around your town.
At every house it stops and knocks on the door. If someone answers it asks "would you like a cup of tea?"
"No thank you" They say and slam the door.
Three hours later the bot comes back, it's been round all the houses and has started again.
"NO THANK YOU" The person who lives there yells, "I don't drink tea, I'm allergic to it" you didn't think of this possibility. The bot doesn't know how to handle it so it ignore it and carries on.
Three hours later it comes back.
The person is now pissed off and calls the cops. It's operating on a public street they say there is nothing they can do about it.
Three hours later it comes back again.
This time the person follows it. All the way around it's loop. Eventually it stops back at your house to restock on water and tea bags.
They knock on your door. "Will you fucking stop your damp bot it's really annoying"
"Oh, but every one likes tea"
"I don't, I'm allergic to it."
"Huh, really?"
"Yes really, and fuck you for that tone. If it knocks on my door again I'm going to smash it."
"That would be destruction of property, I'll call the cops"
"Look just add my house to a list or something so it leaves me alone."
"It doesn't have the memory for every house in the world , I can give you a sticker to put on your front door, it'll ignore it then"
Next week someone else makes a bot that makes coffee and we start this entire cycle again.

The great thing about the idea of a maximum working temperature is it acts as an automatic workers strike for climate change.
Like imagine everyone walking out of every office and workshop today. How long would oil companies bosses last with every other rich CEO unable to make money.
But also remember how greenhouse gas emissions dropped like a stone with the lockdowns?
While a max working temp law is great from just a protecting people point of view, it's secondary effects are massive and why I think there is a going to be a huge pushback from some of the most polluting companies. But I think it'll happen eventually.

I experienced this sort of "transition" from heat exhaustion to heat stroke some years ago. I fell asleep at a 110 °F heat and It was afternoon. I woke up at around 1 AM.

Austria-Hungary had a complex internal structure. The head of state was Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary at the same time, or "Kaiser und König" in German. This was often abbreviated as "K. u. K." when talking about institutions that applied to both Austria and Hungary.
So, technically, it would not be wholly inaccurate to describe the Austro-Hungarian throne as "the K. u. K. chair"

[long pause]
“Anyway… I don’t care about this gender, pronoun, stuff. It’s not my business. All that matters is that she’s very helpful.”
[dad pauses thoughtfully]
“She’s a good colleague… Don’t understand all this fuss about people’s gender these days. She works hard and is always friendly. This media malarkey… About what’s in their pants. Now, that don’t make sense to me.”
“These ‘journalists’ should spend a day with her and see the trans people are good and honest regular folk.”

If they want to be passive observers that’s okay. They aren’t being nefarious by not posting personal information that will cause people to send them unsolicited messages, they’re just shy.
And when people block follow requests for these people, don’t be surprised if they go and tell all of their offline friends that there’s nothing worth reading here.
