A few weeks back I encountered a FOSS guy here explaining that when he sees open source devs ask for money, he blocks them and then stops using their code because they're morally wrong and he only wants to work with tools made by people who are doing the work for the right reasons. (I'm paraphrasing to avoid indexing the post.)

I've resisted writing about it because I'm slammed, but the question I can't shake is: Who benefits from the ideology of "pure" volunteerism?

Our work on a non-public 5G network trial for the Coronation won a best paper award has won a second award, this time at the NAB Show in New York!

Congratulations to our 5G team and partners - read the paper and more about the trial on our site: https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2023-05-5g-non-public-network-coronation

in reply to BBC Research & Development

NAB is in Las Vegas this week. The New York version will take place in October.
in reply to BBC Research & Development

Now implement 5G Broadcast as a Freeview replacement instead of what’s proposed for Freely. The UK internet infrastructure is insufficient for Freely, it will be for a long time, particularly the more rural areas, and it’s inefficient tech anyway.

So, Microsoft is silently installing Copilot onto Windows Server 2022 systems and this is a disaster.

How can you push a tool that siphons data to a third party onto a security-critical system?

What privileges does it have upon install? Who thought this is a good idea? And most importantly, who needs this?

Oooh, Linux is *finally* getting an answer to the Wine synchronization problem. I think this yak has been shaved, what, 5+ times by now over several years?

Everyone is talking about gaming, but this is also *critical* for music production with Windows VSTs. The default Wine emulation is real-time unsafe and completely unusable for this purpose.

The fact that every mainstream news site is now locked behind a paywall is a real boon for the spread of misinformation, because very few right wing sites have paywalls — which means their disinfo and propaganda can spread much more easily. Paywalls are a slow motion disaster.

May I suggest getting a public library card?

I access almost all paywalled material for free via PressReader using my public library.

If you live in a red state, Brooklyn Public Library offers services to victims of GOP book bans & other attacks on literate citizenship. Ditto Boston Public Library.

This always stuns me.
I have a computer and a 24" screen. I also have a phone with a 6" screen. And they try to convince me that the app (on my phone) is better?

Bwahaha is what I say to that.

in reply to Paul

It must be better at something, right? Like login with fingerprint... Or profiling your behaviour for remarketing... At least one of these!
in reply to Kos

@kos And snooping around your phone, if you don't pay attention to all permissions the app wants. (Contacts, texts, photos...) 😬

I love how you mention the actual scientific history of human beings! Countries and borders are man-made fiction/ideas that we choose to believe in, and they keep changing from time to time - there is a stark difference between that and the actual scientific reality of our world. Science is often a very humbling experience I feel like, think of the famous pale blue dot image and how carl sagan described it......
in reply to Rokosun

BTW, I'm glad to hear @bigworldsmallsasha is finally free to stay there in Spain, that must've been a huge relief after having to go through this much trouble.
in reply to Rokosun

Yeah for sure, don't we all miss Carl Sagan 🥰😊
And thank you, yes it is a huge relief, finally 😅
in reply to Rokosun

"It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known." C.S.

Oh yeah, I feel you 😁 Yep. Welcome to the club xD

Him: “You know, I thought you’d be invisible.”
Me: “uhhhh, what?”

No offense but there are thousands and thousands of #Palestinians who "can't even mourn" because #Israel has obliterated them. Entire families have been wiped out by Israel. Several generations in one fell swoop.

Maybe if Israel hadn't been torturing, raping, and persecuting Palestinians for the past 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70+ years there would never have been a #Hamas.

Linux: little cheeky mf commits a backdoor, gets removed before it even makes it to production it's the fucking end of the world, open source software is doomed etc etc...

Important Career Advice: Your job is NOT your family, and you don't owe your job anything beyond the work you're being paid to do.

Prioritize your own growth and well-being over misplaced loyalty, and don't feel guilty about leaving a job.

Companies are not families, they're businesses, it's a business relationship and their goal is to make money.

If they can make more money by laying you off, they will.

If you have an opportunity to better yourself, don't feel guilty about taking it.

Welcome to planet Earth. A random rock in the Universe where the most "intelligent" species only cares about trade. Trade this for that. So that the members of its species spend all of their life trading. That's all it is.

It is not about creating smarter and relaxed humans, and a nice environment for everyone. Not about exploring and learning, or enjoying. It is about trading.

Primitive species.

I wish more people who are worried about FOSS supply side attacks would realize that universal basic income and free healthcare would result in an almost infinite stream of excellent software from people who care more about quality than profit.

reshared this

in reply to Trevor Flowers

I'd like to see your data and the model you use to make that claim. The studies I've seen on UBI indicate benefits to the recipients and society in general, but the number of FOSS developers in the general population is vanishingly small.

Universally paying FOSS developers, not forcing them into unpaid labor, seems like a better way of increasing the supply.

in reply to Trevor Flowers

@Trevor Flowers The only part that's missing from the UBI equation is finding how to actually raise the money to make basic income workable, especially with the expected fewer people in the workforce.

If you see a long German or Swedish word, first of all, don't panic. It's more scared of you than you are of it. Secondly, take a closer look and you'll see it's actually just three normal words in a trenchcoat, huddling together to deter predators (French and English).

You know how COVID suppresses the sense of smell? Based on what I’ve seen while driving over last several weeks, there’s a new variant running rampant that removes people’s ability to perceive the color red. Stop lights, stop signs, all just gone from their perception. The result is damn near tragicomic.

(And I live in Cleveland, land of the red-light runners and jumpers, so for things to get bad enough to be notable is really saying something.)

At this point I just have to sit at green lights until I'm sure cross traffic is actually going to stop. Scary!
in reply to Eric A. Meyer

Also, what is going on with so many cars without license plates? Every time I’m out, I see at least two or three cars without rear plates, usually being driven recklessly.
