You don't need to have a PeerTube account to interact with PeerTube videos.

You can comment, like, share etc PeerTube videos and subscribe to PeerTube channels entirely from within Mastodon.

Just copy and paste a PeerTube video or account URL into the Mastodon search box and press enter. You will then be able to interact with it just as if it was a Mastodon post or account.

Replies to video posts in Mastodon will appear in PeerTube as comments below the videos.

what's a good peertube instance for updated foss vids or an overall community content?
in reply to Akris :arch: :kali_linux_r:

Here are some good PT instances:

Also, try following @FediVideos to see recommended PeerTube videos (currently recommending Halloween-related videos, but usually recommends all kinds of topics)

That's something Friendica does well, next to the permalink there's an icon showing the instance type.
in reply to Mark

I wonder if it would confuse beginners more to label things with protocols?

If you interact with Fediverse accounts in exactly the same way, why not just display it in exactly the same way?

If you want to see an account on its home instance in its native interface, click on its profile avatar and it will open in a new window.

But yes, Friendica is maybe the best platform if you want to be aware of all the platforms/protocols being used (and it also has the most options for following different platforms).

Just to make clear, you don't need to click on its link to interact with a PeerTube video on Mastodon.

The PeerTube video will appear as a Mastodon post, and you can watch it, like it, share it, comment on it, subscribe etc without leaving Mastodon. (You can pretty much ignore the link in its post!)

See the attached screenshots for a guide to how this works.

When I came to know about this feature around a year or so ago, I understood that fediverse is the next big thing on the internet.

Imagine a world where everyone can own their data and software, and yet each of them can talk to each other without needing to create hundreds of accounts each day. Feels like living a dream.
in reply to FediTips has moved!

open protocols for the win😀 Walled gardens can't do that!!

Very interesting. What if I wanted to publish my own video? Then I need an account on PeerTube. Can I use my existing account from here for that somehow?
in reply to Jürgen

To publish on PeerTube you do need a PeerTube account.

I was never able to watch a #peertube video from mastodon. When I click on the play button from mastodon, it always turn to a plain grey and that's it. I always need to follow the link and get to the peertube instance to actually watch it.
But responding to the post from mastodon do create a comment under the video.
I tried from plain web browsing Mastodon under Firefox, as well as app-based browsing under Tusky. Both with the same result. 🙁

my account is on toot.aquilenet.fr/ when I brows this site with Firefox on my laptop (which runs Ubuntu), log in and find some peertube video on my tootline, if I click the play button then it just turns grey (look at the joined screenshots 1 & 2).
The toot's link is : https://mastodon.zeteo.me/@skeptikon/107156497410039616 if I copy and past it in the URL field of my browser, it goes on another mastodon instance and there I can click the play button and see the video (screenshot 3)

Can you try playing this video on your laptop from within Mastodon?

https://tilvids.com/videos/watch/625c1787-a7c5-476a-b712-0a0535d84b15

I am also using Ubuntu on a laptop and it plays ok for me. If it doesn't work for you, then there must be some difference between our systems.
in reply to FediTips has moved!

I get the same problem with any video from any peertube instance : never able to play them directly in my tootline
in reply to 🌱🌺 BotaFlo 🌾🇪🇺🌿🏳️‍🌈

Hmm...

I have the same browser and OS combination playing the same video ok.

Do you have a different ad blocker perhaps?

I use Ublock Origin and Privacy Badger.
in reply to FediTips has moved!

I use consent-o-matic to deny accepting cookis ( https://github.com/cavi-au/Consent-O-Matic ) and adblock-plus ( https://adblockplus.org/fr/ ) to block ads but deactivating these 2 addons doesn't solve the problem
in reply to 🌱🌺 BotaFlo 🌾🇪🇺🌿🏳️‍🌈

I don't know what to suggest in that case.

I am not sure why it works here but not there, if we are using a similar set-up.

The only differences I can think of right now are your Mastodon instance and your ISP.

i have just tested and i can't watch it.
i have firefox extension NoScript to protect me from javascript. when i first try, i got a grey box. I had to allow tilvids.com javascript, and then i get the message:

Sorry - The player is not compatible with your web browser. Please try latest Firefox version.

but i have latest version.

in Firefox console i see errors:

Content Security Policy: The page’s settings blocked the loading of a resource at inline (“script-src”).

Failed to register/update a ServiceWorker for scope ‘https://systerserver.town/’: Storage access is restricted in this context due to user settings or private browsing mode.

DOMException: The operation is insecure.

and many more
in reply to ona [she/they]

thank you for sharing your test. I don't use NoScript, but I do use the strictest parameter to block script tracking from Firefox security parameters. I tried changing the setting to "standard" but it did not change anything and I still get the grey pannel.

Could you ask someone on your instances to try playing the same video?

If the instance is mentioned in the error message, perhaps it has something to do with the issue?
in reply to FediTips has moved!

@feditips @ona
in reply to 🌱🌺 BotaFlo 🌾🇪🇺🌿🏳️‍🌈

...it sounds like there is something in the instance that prevents playback?

Maybe one other test you could do is register on mastodon.online or mstdn.social or mas.to and try playing the video.

If it works for you on mastodon.online or mstdn.social or mas.to, then we know for sure that the issue is somewhere on aquilenet.fr?

browsing mastodon from #Tusky does'nt show the play button but redirect to the peertube instance to play the video there (browsing with Firefox for Android)
in reply to 🌱🌺 BotaFlo 🌾🇪🇺🌿🏳️‍🌈

when browsing the peertube hosting the video ( https://skeptikon.fr/w/9SEzaWi14YsbGN6Y2wJz4a ) I'm not able to make distant interaction, then trying to interact from my mastodon account I get an error message saying something like "unable to get information from this distant account"
in reply to 🌱🌺 BotaFlo 🌾🇪🇺🌿🏳️‍🌈

I am wondering if it is that instance that is the problem. Can you try from a more general instance like share.tube or tilvids.com?

Another thing to make clear:

You can like or comment on a PeerTube video within Mastodon by interacting with that video's post. Comments and likes on a video post in Mastodon appear automatically below the video itself on PeerTube.

However... other people's posts with the same video embedded might look similar when viewed through Mastodon, but they are actually a totally separate thing. Comments on embedded videos will not appear below the video on PeerTube.

You can see the difference in the attached screenshots: PeerTube video posts will have the video creator's address at the top, whereas Mastodon posts with a video embedded in them will have someone else's address.

You can make a PeerTube video post appear on Mastodon etc by pasting the video's URL in the search box and then clicking on it in the results.

You can embed someone's video within your own Mastodon post by just including its URL in your text.

Personally, I prefer following them from my feedreader. PeerTube supports that too!
in reply to FediTips has moved!

Here's a small bug and an easy work around.

When I watched a video from a PeerTube page, and wanted to follow the channel from Mastodon, I tried to input my Mastodon address in the "Subscribe with a remote account" option. But it gave me an error.

I included the @ symbol at the beginning of the full address. But I decided to try again without the beginning @ symbol this time. It worked perfectly this time.

This is a bug, because that's exactly how my address is displayed.
in reply to World Theory

For some reason PeerTube tends to display Fedi addresses as:

username @ instance

while Masto tends to write them as:

@ username @ instance

I don't know why!

(Personally I think the one beginning with @ is better as it avoids confusion with email addresses...)

But as you said, if it doesn't work with one format then it's worth trying the other format.
in reply to FediTips has moved!

I wonder how many people try to email someone's PeerTube address... There's got to be someone out there who's done it... :blobfoxlul:

But yeah, I expect someone might copy+paste it from PeerTube, to somewhere else, and due to the changed context, it could be seen as an email address.

That's confusing, and bad UX. Some system might also automatically parse it as an email address.

in reply to World Theory

Yes to all that.

And also, @ at the start makes it clearer that you can @ someone on the Fediverse, just like on Twitter or Instagram. (Except the Fedi address is a bit longer if someone is on another instance.)
in reply to FediTips has moved!

I'm pretty sure that a couple of years ago I used to be able to like a video on a PeerTube instance, after logging-in using my Mastodon handle in a pop-up dialogue. Was that behaviour changed?

The same for toots on other Mastodon instances, but now the procedures is to copy the URL in the search field of your home instance.
